This episode of “Vitals” on PBS explores the concept of treating gun violence as a public health issue, similar to disease, rather than focusing on criminal punishment. This public health approach to gun violences involves different strategies, for instance: a) Root Cause Analysis to reduce injuries and deaths before they occur; b) Active Rehabilitation offering counseling and follow-up care to gunshot survivors; c) Data-Driven Policies investing in evidence-based policies; and d) Individual and Community engagement particularly on communities of color and underserved populations. The video features gun violence survivors, trauma surgeons, and public policy advocates. You’ll see a testimony from co-victims sharing their emotions after losing a loved one to gun violence, and how they found healing, either on their own or with the support of others.
